Versatility is the order of the day for the choir of The Philharmonic Society of Selangor.

Since its founding in 1958 – yes, that’s 57 years and counting! – it has staged more than 50 productions ranging from classical to contemporary, and everything in between.

This weekend, this community choir is all set to bring you on a nostalgic walk down memory lane with their highly-anticipated Heart & Soul 2015 concert at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac).

In its largest line-up yet, the show will feature a selection of crowd favourites from the last couple of decades, including The Shirelles’ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Bette Midler’s From a Distance, Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon and Queen’s iconic We Will Rock You.

Clocking in at just under two hours, this concert is in aid of The Befrienders Kuala Lumpur and The Assumption – Orang Asli Well Project.

A live band backs the 115-strong choir, led by the talented Nish Tham, who has been working with The Phil, as the choir is fondly known, for the past five years.

“We have a memorable repertoire for Heart & Soul 2015 and we hope the audience will partake in this musical experience,” says choir director Cheryl Teh, adding that the members have been rehearsing for the past seven months for this concert.

The choir is made up entirely of volunteers, with the only prerequisite being that they have a love for the arts, commit to weekly rehearsals, and come with an “open heart and open mind”, according to Teh.

The Philharmonic Society of Selangor was formed with these two pillars in mind: to stage quality musical productions and to promote the arts, and to provide aid to charitable organisations via proceeds from said productions.

To that end, aside from the two Malaysian-based organisations mentioned above, proceeds from Heart & Soul 2015 will also be channelled towards the choir’s joint concert in India next month with Chennai-based Mellow Circle choir.

This joint concert will be in aid of Prathyasha, Mellow Circle's Home of Hope for HIV-affected children.

So head on over this weekend for a musical evening (or afternoon) of kinship and songs!

Heart & Soul 2015 will run at Pentas 1, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (Sentul Park, Jalan Strachan, off Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur) from July 24 to 26. Shows are at 8.30pm (July 24 & 25) and 3pm (July 25 & 26). Concert duration: just under two hours. Tickets range from RM45 to RM100. For ticket purchase, call 03-4047 9000 or visit
