I refer to your article, Have a heart for the elderly (Wheel Power, July 28). I believe Dr Chew Nee Kong has a point in sharing his views about how the “younger” generation seems to acquire more sympathy from the public than the “older” generation. Perhaps this trend has something to do with who the donors are. They could be parents who could feel for the parents of young patients who require help from the public.
I think it is not true that the public has become less empathetic towards older people. To make comments like that based on one case where the older patient did not get sufficient funds is being biased. The fact that Dr Chew’s patient’s daughter gave up her job to look after her own mother already indicates that there is a lot of love for the elderly.
