NTT Data eyes more Indonesia data centre investment

JAKARTA: Japan's NTT Data Group, a unit of telecommunications giant NTT, plans to step up investment in data centres in Indonesia, its Asia Pacific data centre chief told Reuters on Tuesday.

NTT Data is being "very aggressive" by investing in more data centres in Indonesia, Yasuhiro Kajiki, managing director for Japan and Asia Pacific at NTT Data's data centres unit, said in an interview, declining to say how much the company planned to invest

NTT Data is looking to acquire additional land as part of its two- to three-year expansion plan, the company said at an event ahead of the opening of a 12-megawatt data centre annex in Jakarta

The company has invested $500 million in data centres in Indonesia since 2015

The expansion comes as rapid growth in data centres, fuelled in part by demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing, has triggered opposition in some countries, including Malaysia and Indonesia, over pressure on electricity grids and water supplies as well as competition for land

Kajiki said engagement with local communities was important as some projects face opposition from local residents

Indonesia's data-centre market was valued at $2.81 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach $6.08 billion by 2031, according to a Research and Markets report published in January. - Reuters
