BNM: Banks extend repayment deferments to Nepal-China flood victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said banks have extended repayment deferments to all victims affected by the Nepal-China floods, while additional financial assistance is being considered for their families.

“Following our meeting with the next of kin of the victims on Oct 12, relevant banks and insurance and takaful operators (ITOs) have engaged the affected families.

“Repayment deferments have since been extended to all affected victims,” the central bank said in a statement.

It said further assistance being considered included waivers of selected fees and charges, protection of customer assets and deposits, and facilitation of insurance and takaful claims, depending on the circumstances of each family.

BNM said it and the financial industry remained ready to provide appropriate relief and support in accordance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.

“Affected families are encouraged to continue engaging directly with their respective banks and ITOs. Should they require further assistance or clarification, they may reach out to their respective financial institution.”

BNM said it would continue monitoring the progress of these efforts.
