Hibiscus in Seri Pajam energy project partnership

PETALING JAYA: Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd has signed a heads of agreement (HoA) with Seri Pajam Development Sdn Bhd (SPD) to establish an exclusive collaboration framework to evaluate and develop energy projects in Malaysia.

In a statement, it said the proposed projects will involve gas turbines, gas engines, solar power and carbon capture systems on land owned by Seri Pajam and its affiliates.

“In line with the Hibiscus 3.0 strategy of diversifying into energy transition and adjacent energy businesses while retaining oil and gas as its core business, this partnership marks a significant milestone for the group in building its capabilities in power generation to meet Malaysia’s fast-growing power demand from data centres, including those supporting artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.

“The SPD Tech Valley in Senawang has been identified as a strategic industrial park, offering excellent connectivity with smart, sustainable infrastructure that is well suited for data centre developments, potentially supported by a domestic power plant facility.”

This initiative will leverage the letter of collaboration signed on Sept 30, 2025, between Hibiscus Petroleum, Sime Darby Energy Solutions Sdn Bhd, Kawasaki Gas Turbine Asia Sdn Bhd, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.

“The collaboration combines utility-scale engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning capability with proven gas engine and gas turbine combined-cycle power technologies.

“Together, these partnerships enable Hibiscus Petroleum to offer an integrated ecosystem, spanning from project development through long-term operations, underpinned by the group’s strong health, safety and environmental standards and track record in operating oil and gas assets,” said the company.

Commenting on the HoA, senior vice-president of strategic initiatives, Chong Chee Seong, said Hibiscus Petroleum’s partnership with SPD is an important step in its transformational journey.

“Data centres and AI workloads need power that is reliable, efficient and increasingly low-carbon.

“By extending our expertise into distributed power generation, we aim to meet that demand while creating opportunities for additional, more stable revenue streams for our shareholders.”
