PETALING JAYA: Gamuda Bhd
and its Taiwanese partner have won a 29.22 billion New Taiwan dollar (RM3.72bil) design-and-build contract for the Keelung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems and trackwork project in Taiwan.
In a Bursa Malaysia filing yesterday, Gamuda said its unincorporated joint venture with MiTAC Information Technology Corp was awarded the contract by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems under the New Taipei City Government on Oct 14.
Gamuda holds a 72.84% stake in the joint venture, with MiTAC holding the remaining 27.16%.
Gamuda’s share of the contract sum is 21.28 billion New Taiwan dollars, or about RM2.71bil.
The joint venture will act as the main contractor for the project, which is one of the designated additional works under the Xizhi-Donghu MRT project that Gamuda secured on Oct 22, 2024.
The Keelung MRT covers trackwork and systems across a 15.6-km alignment serving 13 stations and spanning Taipei City, New Taipei City and Keelung City.
The scope includes rolling stock, power supply, signalling, platform screen doors, communication systems, a central monitoring system, auto fare collection and depot maintenance equipment.
The project is slated to take 2,820 days, or 7.7 years.
Gamuda said the contract is expected to contribute positively to the group’s revenue and earnings from the financial year ending July 31, 2027, until completion.
MiTAC, incorporated in Taiwan in October 2010 with paid-up capital of about 2.1 billion New Taiwan dollars (RM270mil), specialises in information technology, systems integration and digital transformation, including railway systems such as signalling, communications, power supply, fare collection and platform screen doors. It is a subsidiary of the MiTAC-Synnex Group, which reported annual revenue of US$94bil (RM383.83bil) and about 508,000 employees as of 2025.
The company has previously worked on Taiwan’s Taipei Circular Line, Sanying Line and Danhai Light Rail projects.
Gamuda said the project was subject to risks associated with large-scale railway projects, including construction and implementation, availability of skilled labour, cost fluctuations, systems integration and regulatory compliance.
It said it would manage these under its existing risk management framework.
It added that the project would incorporate environmental, social and governance principles, including eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems and sustainable construction practices.
