Kuala Lumpur: U Mobile has achieved 90% 5G coverage of populated areas (CoPA) nationwide, more than nine months ahead of its July 2027 commitment, marking a key milestone in Malaysia’s Dual 5G Network model.
The telecommunications company or telco said its ULTRA5G network reached the 90% coverage threshold on Oct 6, following its achievement of more than 80% CoPA in March this year, less than nine months after the rollout began.
The latest milestone was announced at an event officiated by Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
Fahmi said this rollout of digital infrastructure reflected mobile network operators’ strong commitment to accelerating Malaysia’s digital transformation.
He said the government’s decision to adopt a dual 5G network model has proven effective in fostering healthy competition, encouraging investment and driving innovation in the country’s telecommunications sector. “The reason is that we are now at a stage, not only in Malaysia but in many parts of the world, where questions around digital infrastructure are fundamental to technological progress, and the use of applications will start to be adopted.
“We have a bigger task ahead of us, which is, given the kind of infrastructure that has been laid out, how can we convince many, especially in the industry, to adopt the kind of solutions that we believe they should be adopting today,” he said at U Mobile’s CoPA 5G event here yesterday.
