Johor Port reaching this year's 15 million TEU target

MERSING: Johor Port is close to achieving its target of handling 15 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) this year and is expected to break into the world’s top 10 container ports in 2026.

Johor Port Authority (JPA) chairman Dr Rosnan Fathlal said the target aligns with the Ministry of Transport’s aim to place two of the country’s ports among the world’s top 10.

"We also expect Johor Port to rank 11th this year, based on container handling that combined TEUs at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and Pasir Gudang Port,” he told Bernama at the launch ceremony for an artificial reef anchor at the Cargo Jetty here today.

Mersing District Officer Jamil Hasni Abdullah officiated the launch.

Rosnan said the artificial reef initiative is a continuation of JPA’s first artificial reef anchor, which was at Pulau Tinggi on Oct 30, 2025.

"The ‘Big Trophy’ artificial reef anchor, measuring about six meters long, three meters wide and three meters high, weighing more than five tonnes and constructed using a combination of hollow steel and concrete, will be sunk in the waters of Pulau Sibu here tomorrow.

"This artificial reef anchor also features the JPA logo and involves an allocation of RM50,000 in collaboration with Nautika Marine Engineering,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rosnan said JPA plans to collaborate with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) next year to research turtle conservation, monitor the existing artificial reef, and assess its impact on increasing populations of species in Johor waters. - Bernama
