Bank Islam announces retirement of chairman Ismail Bakar

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd has announced the retirement of its chairman, Tan Sri Dr Ismail Bakar, effective Aug 22, 2026, after six years on the board.

He has been the bank’s chairman since August 2020.

In a statement today, the bank said Ismail had provided leadership and strategic guidance to support the group’s growth, governance excellence, and long-term value creation, and had also strengthened its governance framework and corporate transformation agenda.

In the interim, senior independent non-executive director Mohd Yuzaidi Mohd Yusoff will preside over board meetings from Aug 22 until a new chairman is appointed.

Bank Islam group chief executive officer YM Raja Datin Paduka Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz said that Ismail’s stewardship has strengthened the group’s governance foundations, strategic focus and institutional capabilities.

"We thank him for his significant contribution to Bank Islam’s development and wish him every success in the future,” she said. - Bernama
