KUALA LUMPUR: Gentari Sdn Bhd, through its subsidiary Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd, has deployed a 3.1 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2), marking a step forward in the solarisation of Malaysia’s transport infrastructure.
The clean energy solutions provider said under a power purchase agreement, the renewable electricity generated will support operations at gateway@klia2, the retail and lifestyle integrated complex within KLIA2 operated by Segi Astana Sdn Bhd.
Segi Astana is a joint venture between WCT Holdings Bhd
and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), with retail operations managed by WCT Malls Management Sdn Bhd.
"The project comprises approximately 5,212 solar panels installed across an estimated 10,500 square metres of rooftop and car park space.
"It is expected to generate around 4,277 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy while reducing carbon emissions by approximately 3,310 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually," it said in a statement.
Its group chief operating officer and Malaysia country head, Shah Yang Razalli, said integrating solar power at KLIA2 demonstrates that renewable energy can be deployed without disrupting critical operations.
"Delivered in an active airport setting, the project reflects Gentari’s ability to execute across complex, brownfield assets where safety, reliability and business continuity are paramount.
"The inclusion of solar car park structures also provides added value, offering shaded parking for passengers and airport staff while supporting sustainability objectives," he said.
Gentari added that the initiative builds on existing green mobility efforts at KLIA2, including the installation of 12 electric vehicle (EV) charging points, and is expected to deliver more stable energy costs and strengthen operational resilience as passenger traffic and vehicle volumes continue to grow, particularly ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
