TNB undertakes grid planning enhancements to support Malaysia's RE goals

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd is already undertaking grid planning enhancements to support higher renewable energy integration in line with Malaysia’s quest to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

This includes identifying connection points and system upgrades that enable new clean energy projects to be safely and efficiently absorbed into the grid, TNB’s senior chief strategy, regulatory and sustainability officer, Datuk Ir. Muhamad Nazri Pazil, said.

He said TNB was strengthening delivery capability by embedding system readiness into grid planning and operational decisions, drawing on its responsibility for planning and operating a power system serving more than 10 million customers.

"Ambition is being translated into delivery across the energy system,” he said during conversations at a session on "Managing Sustainability and Energy Transition” at the Malaysia Economic Forum 2026.

Officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on February 5, the economic forum serves as a premier platform bringing together national leaders, policymakers, industry captains, and strategic investors to deliberate on Malaysia’s economic direction amid an evolving global landscape.

Malaysia’s transition to clean and renewable energy depends on a power grid that is stronger, smarter, and capable of supporting significantly higher levels of renewable energy.

The aim is for renewables to form the backbone of the grid.

Muhamad Nazri said that, beyond policy ambition, delivering Malaysia’s energy transition requires systems that are already being strengthened, adapted, and prepared for change.

He said significant effort was also being directed towards grid reinforcement and modernisation to ensure the power system remains reliable and flexible as renewable variability increases and demand patterns evolve.

"This preparation is critical to safeguarding reliability and affordability as the transition accelerates,” he said.

He added that these actions reflect TNB’s role in translating strategy into delivery, in line with the national policy direction led by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

By strengthening system readiness today, he said the national power company was enabling an energy transition that is practical, resilient, and capable of supporting Malaysia’s long-term economic growth.

TNB’s renewable energy grid, guided by the "Grid of the Future" (GoTF) strategy, is modernised, digitalised, and resilient infrastructure designed to integrate, manage, and distribute renewable energy (RE), supporting Malaysia’s net-zero emissions target by 2050.

It facilitates the transition from fossil fuels to cleaner sources, including large-scale solar, hydro, and potential hydrogen projects. - Bernama
