Bursa Malaysia updates investor categories to reflect trading trends

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Bhd will enhance its investor segment classification to provide greater granularity on trading participation data across the market.

In a statement, the stock exchange operator said the changes will take effect from April 6, 2026.

“The enhancements will involve distinguishing nominee accounts held by institutional and retail investors, thereby providing a clearer representation of each investor segment’s trading participation,” it said.

In addition, investment flows of foreign-owned companies incorporated in Malaysia will be reclassified based on the source of investment funds rather than ownership structure, to better reflect domestic investment activity.

Bursa Malaysia said the updated investor categories will be reflected in its data packages from April 6 and have been communicated to data subscribers in line with its usual practice.

“This initiative is in response to the growing use of nominee structures and reflects the Exchange’s ongoing commitment to ensure that information remains relevant, transparent and reflective of current trading behaviours and market dynamics,” it added.
