Northport breaks container, conventional cargo handling records in July 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Northport (M) Bhd has achieved unprecedented success by breaking monthly records in both its container and conventional cargo business segments in July 2024.

Northport handled its highest-ever monthly container throughput of 354,548 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), surpassing the previous record of 335,361 TEUs set just two months ago in May 2024.

Meanwhile, its conventional cargo business segment also recorded its highest monthly performance, handling 1.14 million freight weight tonnes (FWTs), surpassing the previous record of 1.13 million FWTs set in October 2023.

Northport chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof said its continued success in breaking the records demonstrates Northport’s resilience and adaptability in the face of global challenges.

"The ongoing geopolitical situations continue to impact international trade routes, and we have effectively positioned ourselves as a reliable alternative for shipping lines,” he said in a statement today.

He said the record-breaking performance in July can be attributed to several factors, including an increase in ad-hoc vessel calls, with Northport handling a total of 159 ad-hoc calls this year.

"The introduction of new shipping services in recent months and consistently high productivity resulting from improved infrastructure investments have further contributed to the higher container and cargo handling," he said.

According to the statement, Northport handled a total of 2.08 million TEUs of containers for the first seven months of 2024, marking a significant increase of 16.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

"In the conventional cargo business segment, Northport handled 7.03 million FWTs year-to-date, representing a 10.1 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2023,” it said.

It said these achievements have put the company on a strong trajectory to potentially surpass its all-time high annual container handling record of 3.32 million TEUs set in 2021 and the highest conventional cargo handling record of 11.41 million FWTs set in 2023.

Northport, one of the largest multi-purpose gateway ports of its kind in the national ports system, is grouped under MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s largest integrated logistics service provider. - Bernama
