CAN, WWF join forces to raise awareness of nature protection

Muhamad Umar says the loss of nature and biodiversity poses a significant risk to the world and is a major contributor to the climate crisis.

KUALA LUMPUR: CEO Action Network (CAN), together with WWF-Malaysia, will organise “CAN Nature Retreat 2023” to bring together leaders from various industries to help shape the role of Malaysian businesses in sustainable development and protection of nature.

The programme, to be held in Genting Highlands from July 17-18, will feature a series of high-level dialogues to pool knowledge as well as galvanise support to operationalise commitments and amplify collective actions to combat climate change and nature loss.

CAN steering committee chairperson and Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift said the loss of nature and biodiversity poses a significant risk to the world and is a major contributor to the climate crisis.

“Recognising the close link between sustainable businesses and nature, it is imperative to raise awareness among corporate leaders,” Muhamad Umar said in statement.

Meanwhile, WWF-Malaysia executive director and CEO Sophia Lim said businesses and financial institutions can be the world’s strongest positive forces for sustainability.

“Globally and in Malaysia, corporates and businesses are embracing sustainability values. They are increasingly engaging and investing in collaborations on nature-related projects.

“However, the transition to a nature-positive economy needs to move faster.

“Malaysian businesses need to be part of this transition – to avoid being left behind and to secure a world we can thrive in,” she said.
