LANGKAWI: Sapura Secured Technologies, a company involved in defence electronics, is eyeing ASEAN, the Middle East and North Africa as potential markets for its latest military VHF tactical radio, TRC 5200.

Chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said the company is targeting to sell 1,000 units per year of the radio directly to its customers or through its global partner.

“This communication tools has high-performance digital processing, digital transmission associated with built-in encryption to ensure confidentiality and secure communications,” he told reporters after the launching of the radio here today.

The radio was launched by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace 2019 (LIMA’19) exhibition, which began today until March 30 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre and Resort World Langkawi.

Mohd Zarif said the radio has a better range, wider bandwith, allowing it to transmit video and data, and lower power consumption compared to its predecessor, TRC5102.

The TRC5102 is the company’s first generation radio, launched by Dr Mahathir at LIMA 97.

While the earlier versions of its military radio were developed in collaboration with a global technology partner, Zarif said Sapura has over the years mastered the technology and capability to fully design, develop and manufacture its products locally.

“We are especially proud that it is 100 per cent designed, developed and manufactured by our local engineers and experts, with the intellectual property rights owned by Sapura,” he said.

He said besides the ability to produce world-class hardware, the company has the capability to develop complex software and manipulate world-class engines, turning them into technology of the same standards as those being used by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. - Bernama
