China’s Chery plans to make cars in Indonesia, daily says

JAKARTA: Chinese auto maker CheryAutomobile is planning to set up aproduction base in Indonesia for its CheryQQ model aimed at the Southeast Asianmarket, an Indonesian newspaperreported yesterday. 

Bisnis Indonesia said Chery had askedIndonesia's second largest autodistributor PT Indomobil SuksesInternasional Tbk if it could produce themodel.

Indomobil, a distributor for a number ofglobal brands, distributes the Chery QQ inIndonesia. The company recently lost thedistribution rights for Mazda Motor Corp.Indonesia is a production base for anumber of leading global automakerssuch as Toyota Motor Corp, Honda MotorCo and Suzuki Motor Corp. 

Although sales of new vehicles inIndonesia hit a record high of 533,910last year, the sector has been hit this yearby soaring inflation and high interestrates. New auto sales dropped nearly 50%in the first eight months of this year froma year earlier. – Reuters
