TAN Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay, founder and executive chairman of the YTL group of companies, has been appointed pro-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Yeoh, a chartered builder with 51 years of experience and knowledge of construction, is also a prominent leader in the local construction industry as well as in the Asia and Western Pacific regions.
Projects helmed by the YTL group included the Sibu Airport, KL International Airport Express Rail Link, two gas fired-power plants, a one million-tonne cement plant, 16 hospitals, high-rise buildings as well as housing projects in Papua New Guinea, South Africa and the Seychelles.

Yeoh has been the honorary life president of Master Builders Association Malaysia since June 1988.
He is also the past president and life member of the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors' Association.
He also holds the position of vice-president of the Malaysia-Japan Economic Association.
He was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July 1988.
In October 2002, he was conferred an honorary doctorate in philosophy (business administration) by the same university in recognition of his entrepreneurial and management skills.
Yeoh is also known to be an extremely generous and compassionate man who places great importance in the well-being of his employees and tireless in his efforts to contribute to society.
A philanthropist, Yeoh takes the lead among corporate leaders in contributing to welfare organisations.
The biggest beneficiaries of his generosity are educational institutions.
