IT was a career path that was steered onto the fast lane when Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff was appointed chief executive of Proton, the national car project, in 1997.
Although he was better known as a rally driver, he joined Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton) with a marketing background in two multinational corporations, Nestle and Shell.
