AMD Penang has invested US$1mil in the production of flash memory units under a new brand name, Spansion, at its facility in the Bayan Lepas free industrial zone.
The product, which first rolled out from Penang last month, was an initiative by FASL Penang, AMD Inc's joint venture with Fujitsu Ltd.
AMD Penang & FASL Penang managing director Mohd Sofi Osman said FASL , which opened early this year, handled the production of flash memory units, while AMD continued with its other range of products.
Besides Penang, Spansion is simultaneously produced at AMD factories in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, China, Japan and the United States. The output from Penang is distributed to clients in the US, Europe and South Korea, Sofi said after a visit by Yang Di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and his consort Toh Puan Majimor Shariff to AMD Penang and FASL Penang yesterday.
He said FASL was a 60:40 joint venture company between AMD Inc and Fujitsu to integrate their flash memory chip businesses.
Sofi also said that AMD Penang would also be responsible for assembling AMDs new Athlon 64 microprocessor, which would be launched here on Sept 24.
He noted that in April this year, AMD had launched the AMD Opteron processor, which was a breakthrough for AMD in the server market.
It is the only processor compatible with older x86 applications yet possessing the horsepower to migrate up to 64-bit, high-end, corporate solutions, he said.
In May last year, AMD had introduced the first flash memory devise based on MirrorBit architecture, which enabled a flash memory product to hold twice as much data without compromising data integrity, he added.
Sofi said the Penang AMD plant as a whole specialised in the assembly of advanced logic and memory products in ceramic and plastic packages using wire bond and C4 flip chip process.
We also test, mark and pack advanced devices along with warehouse operations that allow direct shipment of products to customers worldwide, he said.
Sofi said while manufacturing remained AMD's core activity, it also provided technical services in process and packaging development, product and design engineering, worldwide assembly sub-contractor operations management, as well as housing the second largest device design centre for FASL operations here.
