DHAKA: Actress Pori Moni today secured bail from a Dhaka court after surrendering in a case filed by businessman Nasir U Mahmood, former president of Uttara Club Limited, over allegations of assault, vandalism, attempted murder and issuing threats.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman granted her bail following a petition, defence lawyer Nelanjona Refat told The Daily Star.

The development came a day after the court cancelled her bail and issued an arrest warrant against her for failing to appear at a hearing in the case. The hearing was scheduled for recording witness testimony, court sources said. The prosecution had sought cancellation of her bail.

On March 18, 2024, Inspector Md Monir Hossain of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Dhaka district, pressed charges against Pori Moni and her associate Junaid Karim Jimmy. The court accepted the charges on April 18 that year.

On January 26 last year, the court framed charges against Pori Moni and Jimmy.

The court also discharged Fatema-Tuz-Jannat Bony, an associate of Pori Moni, from the case after the investigating officer found no evidence of her involvement.

Nasir, a former executive of Dhaka Boat Club, filed the case against Pori Moni and two others on July 6, 2022.

According to his complaint, Pori Moni and her friends used to visit prominent clubs, consume alcohol and take liquor away without paying, threatening to file false cases by exploiting their connections with the police.

The complaint alleged that on the night of June 9, 2021, Pori Moni and her associates visited Dhaka Boat Club in Savar. When Nasir refused her request to take a bottle of liquor without paying, she allegedly verbally abused him and threw a serving glass and a mobile phone at him, injuring his head and chest.

Nasir also alleged that they threatened to beat and kill him. The complaint further claimed that Pori Moni subsequently filed a case against him and the others to cover up the incident.

On June 14, 2021, Pori Moni had filed a case against Nasir and two others with Savar Police Station, accusing them of attempted rape and attempted murder over the same incident. - The Daily Star/ANN
