The Asean contingent led by the Thais shines at the Maybank Championship at KLGCC

South-East Asia was well represented at KLGCC this week, with 14 players from the region in the field. Thailand had the strongest presence among the LPGA Tour players, with five of its tour members competing.

The Maybank Championship Asean Qualifier, held at the same venue in August, opened the door for five more regional talents.

The qualifiers were Malaysia’s Liyana Durisic, who secured the fifth and final spot, joining Thailand’s Sriwong and Tojai, as well as Pimnipa Panthong and Sarisa Pojanalai.

Malaysians Natasha Andrea Oon, Mirabel Ting, Genevieve Ling and Kelly Tan teed off as Sponsor’s Invitations. The tournament struck a nostalgic note for Kelly Tan, as she announced her retirement from competitive golf after submitting her score.

Buoyed by the wave of home support, Ting finished as the leading Malaysian for the third successive year in T48 at 5-under par.

The 21-year-old’s T12 finish as an amateur in 2024 remains the best by a Malaysian in championship history. Ting will join the LPGA Tour in 2027 after a standout rookie season on the Epson Tour, where she claimed two wins and topped the Race for the Card standings.

Off the course, the Maybank Village turned the venue into a celebration of Asean culture and community, reflecting the belief that progress in the game is driven by shared ambition and collaboration.

As for the tournament, the Maybank Championship crowned its first-ever two-time winner, with Miyu Yamashita finishing on 22-under-par 266 following rounds of 65, 66, 67 and 68 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).

With a two-stroke victory at KLGCC’s challenging West Course, the 25-year-old from Japan added a second Tiger Trophy to the one she lifted in 2025 and chalked up her fifth career win on the LPGA Tour.

Yamashita claimed the winner’s cheque of US$450,000 from the US$3 million total prize purse, along with 500 Race to CME Globe points, which lifts her two places to second in the standings as the season heads into its final stretch. Yamashita broke 70 in all four rounds and moved into the lead after the second round. She held a two-shot advantage heading into the final day and closed with a four-under-par 68, to hold off China’s Yan Liu by two strokes.

The young Thai amateur Marisa Tojai was the star of the show for South-East Asia. She finished joint-third with Frenchwoman Pauline Roussin-Bouchard after a score of 269.

Her run in Malaysia is not surprising, as Tojai had already won four amateur titles in 2026 before she went to the qualifier and is said to be among the brightest stars among the young crop of Thai golfers. -- LPGA/Maybank Championship
