SEOUL: The season’s first snow fell on the upper slopes of Seoraksan on Thursday (Oct 29) as temperatures dropped below freezing across parts of Gangwon Province.

Snow began falling at around 11:40am in areas including Daecheongbong, the mountain’s highest peak, according to the Seoraksan National Park Office. No accumulation had been recorded as of 12:40pm.

The temperature at Jungcheong shelter fell to minus 2.5 degrees Celsius.

The snowfall came nine days later than last year’s first snow and 10 days later than in 2024.

Park officials asked hikers to take care in the cooler weather. “Hiking in autumn, when temperatures vary widely throughout the day, can lead to hypothermia and exhaustion, so particular caution is needed,” a park official said.

“Hikers should thoroughly prepare cold-weather gear, including warm clothing, gloves and hats, along with emergency food, medication, flashlights and power banks.” - The Korea Herald/ANN
