HONG KONG; An application to increase fares for Star Ferry has been approved by the Chief Executive in Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), according to a press release issued by the HKSAR government on Wednesday.
The fare adjustment will apply to two routes, Central–Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai–Tsim Sha Tsui, and take effect on Jan 25, 2027. Adult weekday fares will be capped at HK$6 (about US$0.76) and weekend fares at HK$8.30, while the monthly ticket price will remain at HK$190.
A spokesperson for the HKSAR government said the fare adjustment was necessary as the ferry operator faced persistent financial challenges and rising costs. The operator has been encouraged to improve its long-term financial viability through a multipronged approach to continue providing quality services to passengers and preserve this historical landmark.
Star Ferry has operated cross-harbour ferry services since 1898 and remains a key icon of Hong Kong. Even after the fare increase, it will remain a relatively affordable means of cross-harbour public transport.
