BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The public has been warned against fraudulent SMS messages claiming recipients have committed traffic violations and directing them to fake websites to provide personal information and make payments.

The E-Government National Centre (EGNC) said the messages contain links to fraudulent websites impersonating the centre to obtain sensitive information and payments for alleged traffic offences.

In a public advisory issued yesterday, EGNC clarified that the messages were not issued by the centre, which does not request payments through SMS, WhatsApp or messaging links.

The public is advised not to click on suspicious links, download attachments from unknown sources or disclose personal information, passwords, one-time passwords (OTPs) or banking details.

Members of the public should also verify government website addresses, including the official.gov.bn domain, exercise caution with messages claiming to represent government agencies, and avoid forwarding unverified messages.

Those who receive suspicious messages or require clarification can contact Talian Darussalam 123, email corpcomms@egnc.gov.bn or visit Instagram @egnc.bn.

Anyone who has disclosed sensitive information or made payments is advised to contact their bank immediately and report the incident to the Anti-Scam Hotline at 16993. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
