36 injured after store ceiling collapses

Part of the ceiling collapsed at a South Korean grocery store, leaving 36 people injured, according to Yonhap news agency.

The incident occurred around 10.16am local time yesterday at a grocery store in Daegu, some 240km southeast of Seoul.

The collapse triggered an evacuation of 66 shoppers inside the building, all of whom managed to escape the premises on their own, while 36 people sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.

Nine of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Most of the injuries appeared to have occurred as panicked shoppers rushed to flee the building, getting scratched or scraped by falling debris, a fire official was quoted as saying.

The police and fire authorities have planned to investigate the exact cause of the collapse. — Xinhua
