BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Belait Shipping Co (B) Sdn Bhd (BSC) has marked a significant milestone in local maritime development with the appointment of Captain Kamiruzan Natazul Eqbal Kamis as the first local Master Senior Dynamic Positioning Officer (SDPO) of Belait PSV1.

A Senior Dynamic Positioning Officer oversees a vessel’s Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations, using specialised technology that enables vessels to maintain their position and heading automatically. This capability is essential in offshore operations where precision, vessel control and safety are critical.

The appointment was marked by a contract signing ceremony with Executive Chairman and CEO of BSC Awang Ali, alongside members of the company’s Senior Management Team.

Captain Kamiruzan began his maritime career as a Deck Cadet in 2002 before joining BSC in 2009 as a Second Officer. He progressed to Chief Officer onboard the company’s non-DP vessels before moving into Dynamic Positioning as a DPO in 2022. In 2024, he achieved his Master Unlimited Certificate of Competency (CoC), marking another important step towards command.

Today, more than two decades after starting at sea, his appointment as Master SDPO represents years of experience, professional development and progression through the ranks.

For BSC, the milestone reflects its continued commitment to developing Bruneian maritime talent. Building local capability requires years of practical experience, training, professional certification and opportunities for seafarers to take on greater responsibilities.

Awang Ali said the appointment was a proud moment for BSC and highlighted the importance of investing in local professionals.

“Localisation is not achieved overnight. It is built over time through experience, training, mentoring and, most importantly, giving people the opportunity to take on responsibility. Captain Kamiruzan’s appointment is a proud moment for BSC and demonstrates what can be achieved when we continue to invest in our people and provide them with opportunities to grow.”

Captain Kamiruzan’s journey serves as an example for the next generation of Bruneian seafarers, demonstrating how dedication, continuous learning and experience can lead to senior leadership roles within the maritime and offshore industry.

From his first days at sea to taking command of Belait PSV1, his achievement represents another step forward in strengthening Brunei’s local maritime capability. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
