HANOI: Streets across Hanoi are decorated with national flags, banners and slogans in the run-up to the 72nd anniversary of Capital Liberation Day.
Oct 10, 1954 marked the liberation of Hanoi, bringing to an end the nine-year resistance war led by the Ho Chi Minh Government against French forces.

A festive yet solemn atmosphere can be felt across the capital, recalling the historic moment when victorious Vietnam People's Army entered Hanoi to take over the capital from the French forces.
Along downtown streets such as Dinh Tien Hoang and Trang Tien, and around Hoan Kiem Lake, red flags with yellow stars, banners and slogans line the streets under the clear autumn sky. In smaller streets and alleys, residents have also hung national flags outside their homes.
The bright red colours not only recall the historic milestone of 1954 but also highlight the vitality of Hanoi, a thousand-year-old cultural capital that continues to evolve. — Vietnam News/ANN
