Typhoon Choi-wan approaches Ogasawara Islands as two new typhoons form


TOKYO: Typhoon Choi-wan, or Typhoon No. 27, was approaching Tokyo’s Ogasawara Islands as of 9am on Monday. The Japan Meteorological Agency also announced that two new typhoons, Nolo and Koguma, formed near the Midway Islands and Marshall Islands on the day.

Typhoon Choi-wan is a very strong typhoon, moving north-north-west at 20 kilometres per hour, according to the agency. Its central atmospheric pressure is 925 hectopascals, with maximum winds near the centre of 50 metres per second (180kph).

The typhoon is forecast to move over the sea east of Japan.

Typhoon Nolo developed from a hurricane into a typhoon near the Midway Islands. It was moving west at 30 kilometres per hour.

Typhoon Koguma transformed from a tropical depression into a typhoon near the Marshall Islands. It was moving north-west at 15 kilometres per hour. -Japan News/ANN
