BANGKOK: Mae Wong National Park, which spans Kamphaeng Phet and Nakhon Sawan provinces, has temporarily closed to visitors and overnight stays after severe natural-disaster damage left tourist accommodation unusable and sections of roads impassable.

The closure took effect Friday (Oct 2) and will remain in place until further notice while officials repair damaged infrastructure and restore safe access to the park.

Roads cut and visitor accommodation damaged

The park said recent severe weather had caused substantial damage to infrastructure essential for tourism.

Visitor accommodation has been damaged and is not currently suitable for use, while some sections of roads have been washed out or damaged to the point that vehicles cannot pass.

Officials have therefore suspended access as a safety precaution while repairs are carried out.

Mae Wong was also among three national parks in the region affected by heavy rain, flash floods and landslides in late September, according to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

Repairs under way before reopening

Park authorities are mobilising personnel to repair roads, accommodation and other public facilities damaged by the disaster.

The park will reopen only after conditions return to normal and officials determine that tourism facilities and access routes are safe for visitors.

No reopening date has yet been announced. - The Nation/ANN
