Suspected robber killed, policeman injured in Islamabad encounter

ISLAMABAD: A suspected robber was killed while a policeman was injured in an encounter in the capital on Sunday night, police said. Another suspect, however, managed to escape.

The two suspects were allegedly involved in robberies on Fatehjang Road and Dhoke Paracha committed shortly before they ran into the police. The police said a six-member police patrolling team had set up a picket on G.T. Road near Golra Mor for checking. At around 9:05pm, two motorcyclists appeared there from the Tarnol side.

On suspicion, the police team signalled them to stop. However, the motorcyclists applied the brakes and tried to turn their motorcycle, but both fell on the road and started firing at the police team. As a result, Constable Atif Mehmood sustained a bullet injury.

The suspects then ran towards Chungi No. 26, with one of them continuing to fire at the police. As a result, his accomplice sustained a bullet injury while the other suspect managed to escape.

The policemen also fired shots in the air in self-defence. Later, the injured policeman was shifted to the hospital for medical assistance. The police also found the injured suspect lying on the road and recovered a 30-bore pistol from him along with several mobile phones. He was also taken to the hospital where he died.

The motorcycle and three mobile phones were confiscated and shifted to the police station. The police said the two suspects were involved in robberies — one on Fatehjang Road at 8pm and the other at Dhoke Paracha at 8pm.
