BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Air quality across all four districts remained at the moderate level Tuesday morning, with Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings ranging from 51 to 60.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development recorded a PSI reading of 51 in Brunei-Muara at 9am, while Belait, Temburong and Tutong each recorded 60.

A PSI reading below 50 is classified as good, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered moderate. Readings of 101-200 are classified as unhealthy, 201-300 as very unhealthy and above 300 as hazardous.

JASTRe said air quality reporting has been enhanced since Sept 1 by incorporating PM2.5 concentrations into the PSI.

The World Health Organization defines PM2.5 as fine suspended particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres. The particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

During the hazy period, JASTRe will continue monitoring air quality and issue PSI updates five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
