YANGON: The river in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, has exceeded the danger mark and reached more than 30 feet, inundating many towns and villages.
However, since Sunday (Oct 4), roads have been reopened and vehicles are moving.
"The water level between Myeik and Tanintharyi has receded. In Le Taung Ya village, the water level was nine feet above the road during the flood.
"Thousands of people have been evacuated to higher ground. Now, there is still some water between Tanintharyi and Bok Sing Township, but cars can travel," said a local from Tanintharyi.
The road on the Tanintharyi-Botsing-Kawthong Pyithu Hluttaw section of the road is now only about one foot deep, making it usable.
"The Tanintharyi River, which originates in Dawei, has risen sharply due to heavy rains and landslides in the Dawei area. It has exceeded all the warning and danger levels in a few days.
"It has cut off all travel links between Myeik and Dawei, Kawthaung and Tanintharyi. Now, from Myeik, we can go to Tanintharyi, Boksing, and Kawthaung. We still can't go to Dawei," said the locals.
According to the morning measurement on Oct 5, the water level of the Tanintharyi River was 19 feet, and volunteers were rushing to help.
