NEW DELHI: A baby girl was allegedly strangled to death within a few hours of her birth inside a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Ashok Nagar district.

The incident occurred in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the district hospital on Saturday (Oct 3). The family is from Sakra village in the Chanderi area.

According to the police, the baby girl was born at around 11.50pm on Friday and was admitted to the SNCU soon after.

However, at around 3pm on Saturday, she was found dead.

Kotwali Police Station House Officer Ravipratap Singh Chauhan said the police were informed about the incident and a postmortem examination was conducted.

The postmortem revealed strangulation marks on the girl’s neck. The official said the police strongly suspect the involvement of a close family member, including the deceased girl’s mother or paternal grandmother.

Initial police investigations revealed that the girl was born into a family that already had two daughters. Further investigation is underway. - The Statesman/ANN
