YANGON: Myanmar held a ceremony in Naypyitaw on Thursday (Oct 1) to mark the International Day of Older Persons, the state-owned daily Myanma Alinn reported Friday.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Soe Win said the event honoured and recognised older persons for their experience and knowledge, their service to their families and the nation, and their contributions to community and national development.

This year's International Day of Older Persons was observed under the theme "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives."

Soe Win emphasised the need for proactive preparations to address the needs of the future elderly population, as well as collective efforts to ensure older persons have access to proper health services, the report said. - Xinhua
