Sultan Kudarat town in Philippines halts classes after magnitude 4.9 earthquake

KORONADAL CITY: Classes at all levels in public and private schools in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat, were suspended Thursday (Oct 1) afternoon following a magnitude 4.9 earthquake that struck off the municipality.

Mayor Myrna Kapina ordered the suspension through Executive Order No. 040, citing possible structural damage, falling objects, aftershocks, and other earthquake-related hazards that could put students and school personnel at risk.

The suspension will remain in effect until revoked.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake struck at 1.34pm, some 47km southwest of Palimbang at a depth of 10km.

Under the executive order, school heads were directed to coordinate with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and other concerned agencies in assessing the safety and structural condition of school buildings and facilities.

Classes will resume once authorities determine that school premises are safe for occupancy. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
