BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) Guides took part in a storytelling training workshop to strengthen communication, presentation and storytelling skills among BKISHHB officers and Gallery Coordinators.
Conducted in-house, the six-day workshop is divided into two group sessions, with Group ‘A’ attending the workshop on September 23, 24 and 26, 2026, while Group ‘B’ will participate from September 28 to 30, 2026.
For the first session, 21 participants from Group ‘A’ attended the workshop conducted by Jimmy Leong, a Certified United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide Trainer and a storytelling specialist from Malaysia.
The workshop is being held at the Lecture Room and Exhibition Galleries 1 to 9 at BKISHHB. The first day focused on introducing the fundamentals and principles of storytelling, as well as its importance as an effective communication method for conveying information to visitors.
The morning session featured a lecture titled ‘Concept of Storytelling’, providing participants with an introduction to the basic concepts of storytelling and how storytelling techniques can be applied in museum and gallery interpretation.
The afternoon session continued with the lecture ‘Storytelling Techniques’, focusing on techniques for delivering stories in a more effective and engaging manner.
The workshop aims to enhance BKISHHB guides communication and presentation skills, enabling them to deliver information in a more professional and effective manner, while strengthening their storytelling techniques when presenting information on the collections and exhibition galleries.
The storytelling approach is also expected to help guides present exhibition content in a more engaging, interactive and accessible manner to visitors from different backgrounds and age groups. The workshop also places emphasis on building the confidence and presentation skills of officers and Gallery Coordinators when conducting guided tours, contributing towards a more meaningful and visitor-oriented experience.
Throughout the workshop, participants will be introduced to various aspects of storytelling, including understanding the elements that make a story effective in a museum setting, selecting and delivering stories effectively, using vocal expression, and conveying heritage values and meaningful messages in a memorable and accessible manner.
The workshop also includes practical training sessions and simulated guided tours at the exhibition galleries, allowing participants to apply the storytelling knowledge and techniques acquired in real-life situations. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
