Phuket centre cancels Jewish New Year event after protest

PHUKET: Israeli media reports that Chabad Patong in Phuket has cancelled its Rosh Hashanah celebration after a local protest, while the venue remained quiet on Saturday.

Israeli media have reported that Chabad Patong in Phuket has cancelled its planned Rosh Hashanah celebration following opposition from local groups, while the area around the centre appeared unusually quiet on Saturday (September 12).

As of Saturday, no local government agency had announced any further developments concerning the Jewish New Year event at Chabad Patong, after local civic groups staged a protest against the gathering.

The latest development came after Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel reported that Chabad Patong had informed Jewish and Israeli visitors planning to attend that the event had been cancelled.

According to the report, the message referred to a protest involving more than 500 Thai residents near the Chabad centre. Demonstrators carried signs reading “Save Phuket, No Israel” and chanted “Free Palestine”.

The report was consistent with developments observed in Phuket, particularly around Chabad Patong, which appeared unusually quiet despite earlier indications that between 700 and 800 people were expected to attend the celebration.

No local government agency had publicly provided further information about the planned event as of Saturday.

The Rosh Hashanah celebration had been scheduled to take place from September 11 to 13.-The Nation/ANN
