Bangladesh PM orders stricter action against polythene, plastic use


DHAKA: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed law enforcement agencies to take stricter action to curb the excessive use of polythene and plastic.

He also asked the relevant ministries, divisions and agencies to properly discharge their responsibilities in this regard.

The prime minister issued the directives at a review meeting on addressing environmental pollution at the Secretariat this morning.

Chaired by Tarique Rahman, the meeting reviewed the progress of various government initiatives to control air, water, soil and noise pollution, waste management, and future measures.

The meeting also stressed increasing the use of environment-friendly block bricks.

Tarique Rahman called for making the ongoing programmes to control environmental pollution more effective.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam; Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam; Water Resources State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad; Environment, Forest and Climate Change State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam; Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani; Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar; Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam; and Prime Minister’s Special Assistant (Environment, Forest and Climate Change) Saimum Parvez, among others, attended the meeting.

Senior officials from the relevant ministries, divisions and agencies were also present. - The Daily Star/ANN
