NEW DELHI: A three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a school bus after she was left alone with the driver in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai on Wednesday (Sept 2) afternoon, police said.

The 30-year-old driver has been arrested in connection with the case, police said, according to the TOI report.

Girl’s complaint leads to police case

The accused was driving a private bus hired by the school to transport students. Police said the girl travelled on the bus every day along with other children.

On Wednesday, the driver picked up kindergarten and primary school students in Kamothe at around 12.30pm and began dropping them home.

After all the other children got off at their respective stops, the three-year-old allegedly remained alone on the bus with the driver.

Police said the driver took advantage of the situation and allegedly sexually assaulted the child.

The incident came to light after the girl returned home and complained of abdominal pain.

When her grandmother asked what had happened, the child allegedly told her that the “driver uncle” had troubled her inside the bus.

The grandmother first informed the school management and later approached the police.

After a medical examination, police said the child was found to have been sexually assaulted.

A case was subsequently registered against the driver under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to the rape of a girl below 12 years of age, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police said they will also record statements from members of the school management as part of the investigation.

The accused was produced before a Panvel court on Thursday and was remanded to police custody until Saturday. - The Statesman/ANN
