BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Recent workplace inspections conducted across three separate locations in August uncovered multiple first-aid non-compliance issues, resulting in compound fines being levied against the responsible contractors.
An inspection carried out at a construction worksite in Kampong Sengkurong B, Mukim Sengkurong identified a failure to comply with Regulation 5 (First-Aiders) under the Workplace Safety and Health (First-Aid) Regulations, leading to the issuance of a BND500 compound fine.
The affected party was subsequently directed to implement immediate corrective measures to rectify the deficiency.
In a separate inspection conducted at a flat undergoing refurbishment in Beribi, Gadong, authorities similarly detected a breach of Regulation 5 (First-Aiders) under the same regulations, resulting in a BND500 compound fine alongside directives to rectify the non-compliance.
A third inspection at another flat undergoing refurbishment in Beribi uncovered a violation of Regulation 4 (Provision of First-Aid Boxes), which also drew a BND500 compound fine and mandatory corrective orders.
Following the enforcement actions, the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) reminded all industry stakeholders that adherence to the Workplace Safety and Health Act, Chapter 277 and its subsidiary regulations remains mandatory at all times.
Any occupier who fails to comply with the Workplace Safety and Health (First-Aid) Regulations commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding BND5,000.
Repeated non-compliance may lead to further enforcement measures, including court prosecution.
Depending on the gravity and circumstances of related offences under the Act, violators may face heavier penalties, including imprisonment.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety, health, and environmental standards, maintaining that routine inspections and enforcement measures will continue to protect workers, the public, and the environment. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
