Typhoon Gaenari forms near Japan’s Miyako Island; Saudel could hit Okinawa on Wednesday


TOKYO: A tropical cyclone developed into this year’s 20th typhoon about 90 kilometres north-northwest off Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture, on Saturday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The new typhoon, which is named Gaenari, is expected to move west towards Taiwan early next week, according to the JMA.

Typhoon Saudel, also called Typhoon No. 18, was moving in waters near the Mariana Islands on Saturday afternoon, the agency said. The typhoon is expected to grow more powerful and could hit Okinawa Prefecture from Wednesday to Thursday, according to the agency. - Japan News/ANN
