Seven dead, 30 hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor in India's Gujarat state


HYDERABAD, (India): (Bernama) At least seven people have died and 30 others have been hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor in India's western state of Gujarat, local media reported on Thursday (Aug 20).

The incident occurred in Bhavnagar district, where police have arrested 12 people suspected of involvement in the illegal alcohol trade, according to a Press Trust of India (PTI) report.

Consumption of alcohol is banned in Gujarat.

Deaths from consuming cheap and illegally produced alcohol, known as hooch, are common in various parts of India.

Almost 70 people died in a hooch incident in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district in 2024, while dozens were killed in Gujarat's Botad in 2022. - Bernama
