BANGKOK: The Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reported that a magnitude 3.3 earthquake was detected in an area recorded as “Near South Coast of Myanmar” at 9.09am Thai time on Sunday (Aug 16).
The epicentre was at latitude 15.959 degrees north and longitude 96.536 degrees east, at a depth of about 10 kilometres below the surface.
The department’s system recorded the time of the event more precisely as 9.09.53am or 2.09.53am UTC.
Relative to Mae Sot district in Thailand’s Tak province, the epicentre was about 233 kilometres to the south-west.
The division operates systems to monitor and analyse earthquakes in Thailand and neighbouring countries through a network of earthquake-monitoring stations and vibration-measurement stations, providing continuous, 24-hour surveillance and information on seismic activity.
