YANGON: Heavy inflows into Sedawgyi Reservoir in Mandalay Region have prompted controlled water releases, resulting in flooding in some nearby villages and water overflowing onto the Mandalay-Mogok Road, according to the Ministry of Information.
The reservoir, located in Madaya Township, Mandalay Region, has received a large volume of inflowing water, prompting authorities to regulate and release water. As a result, villages near Chaung Ma Gyi have been affected by flooding.
Water has also been overflowing onto the Mandalay-Mogok Road near Tingataung Village, between mileposts 25/1 and 25/5, with the water level reaching about one metre from 6 am. on August 7.
Authorities began operations at around 8:30 am. to ensure the safe passage of vehicles, prevent vehicles from skidding, and avoid traffic congestion. Search-and-rescue operations are also being carried out for people who may be trapped inside homes and brick factories.
The operations are being led by People’s Hluttaw representative Hla Myint, No. 1 Military Tactical Commander Lieutenant Colonel Naing Win Tun, acting chairman of the Township Management and Administration Committee and acting Township Administrator Aung Aung Tun, together with departmental officials, the township fire officer and firefighters, social rescue teams and other social organisations.
The full-reservoir level of Sedawgyi Reservoir is 128 metres. As of the morning of August 7, the water level had reached 127 metres. Authorities have been regulating the outflow by opening five water gates by two feet each and two additional gates by one foot each. - Eleven Media/ANN
