Police seize weapons, arrest 33 in southern Afghanistan


KABUL: Afghan police have seized a large cache of weapons and military equipment and arrested 33 suspects during a series of operations in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, the provincial official said Saturday.

The operations were conducted in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, and several districts of the province, Mullah Nasir Ahmad Mohajer, spokesperson for the provincial police headquarters, said.

The seized items included 59 pistols, eight Kalashnikov rifles, and a rocket launcher, according to the official.

The Helmand police office said it would continue efforts to prevent the illegal possession and carrying of firearms and military equipment and to maintain security and protect public safety in the province. - Xinhua
