MANILA: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday (Aug 6) said at least six people were reported dead amid heavy rainfall due to Tropical Depression Maymay (international name: Kujira).
In a press briefing in Camp Crame, PNP public information chief Col. Allen Rae Co detailed that a rockfall-landslide incident in Rodriguez, Rizal left a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman dead.
Meanwhile, according to Co, a 45-year-old man drowned in Luna, La Union and a 54-year-old man drowned in Alaminos, Pangasinan.
The PNP public information chief further noted that Benguet police reported that a landslide incident in La Trinidad town buried an eatery in mud, killing two male cooks aged 31 and 66.
Co added that the reported fatalities will be further validated by PNP personnel.
He also detailed that 877 PNP officers were deployed to respond to the adverse effects of Tropical Depression Maymay with 10,111 more personnel on standby.
Around 3,012 individuals were monitored by police in 55 evacuation centers across the affected regions, according to Co.
Maymay made landfall in Ilocos Sur early Thursday morning.
The tropical depression was last located in the vicinity of Gamu, Isabela as of 1 p.m., according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (Pagasa) latest cyclone bulletin.
Maymay was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour while moving east-southeastward at 20 kilometers per hour. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
