CANBERRA: Authorities in South Australia (SA) on Thursday (Aug 6) issued an evacuation order for a dangerous sulfur fire burning at an industrial site in the north-west suburbs of Adelaide.
The SA Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) said on Thursday afternoon that anyone within a kilometre of the fire at Port Adelaide should leave immediately.
"Do not enter the area, it is extremely dangerous. Emergency services are on scene; the smoke is considered toxic," an emergency warning said.
Emergency services were initially called to the fire at an industrial storage facility at the port, which is located 14 km north-west of central Adelaide, around 10:15 a.m. local time on Thursday.
The MFS said that the facility is currently being used to store sulfur. It said that the fire was contained within the building, but that heavy smoke was traveling in a south-east direction.
"MFS advises people in the vicinity to close windows, doors and be cautious of smoke," it said.
The SA ambulance service told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that one person was taken to hospital. - Xinhua
