Five people held in connection with gang-rape, murder of a 15-year-old girl

HAILAKANDI: A 15-year-old minor girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered inside her home in Assam’s Hailakandi district, reviving memories of the horrific 2012 Delhi gang rape case.

According to reports, the girl was found dead inside her home with head and face injury.

The alleged incident took place on August 1 but surfaced two days later after locals staged a protest and blocked National Highway 6, connecting Assam to Mizoram.

According to reports, the girl had gone to a relative’s house with her family members to attend a function.

However, she reportedly returned alone following an argument with a cousin.

The accused allegedly took advantage of this and gang-raped her before killing her by hitting her head and face with a heavy object.

When the family returned home later that night, they found her lying in a pool of blood.

While the police are yet to confirm the sexual assault, they have launched an investigation into the case.

“The family claims she was sexually assaulted, but we are waiting for the post-mortem report before drawing any conclusions. We are investigating the matter thoroughly,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amitabh Sinha told reporters, according to NDTV.

Following the incident, angry locals blocked National Highway 6, demanding the immediate arrest and strict punishment of the culprits.

The blockade on the highway, which serves as a vital link between Assam and Mizoram, resulted in a massive traffic jam, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for several hours.

A large police contingent reached the site to investigate the matter. - The Statesman/ANN
