JAKARTA: Policymakers, diplomats, academics, business leaders, youth representatives and members of civil society gathered in Jakarta on Saturday (Aug 1) for the Indonesia Net-Zero Summit (INZS) 2026, where participants called for turning climate pledges into concrete action.
Opening the summit, Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) founder and chairman Dino Patti Djalal warned that climate change has been overshadowed by wars, geopolitical rivalry and trade disputes.
Addressing young participants, he described climate security as the defining challenge of the 21st century and urged them to become "soldiers" in the global fight against climate change.
Indonesia's Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat said the government has instructed local authorities to keep open dumping sites wet to reduce the risk of fires.
He said authorities conduct regular satellite monitoring to detect hotspots and deploy field teams to extinguish fires as soon as they are identified.
He expressed the confidence that these measures will help reduce fire risks during the current El Nino period.
