NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Thursday, July 30, denied rumours that Jantar Mantar in the national capital had been locked or closed for protests, stating that the claims were "entirely false, misleading, and devoid of facts".
In an official statement on X, police said that Jantar Mantar continues to remain an "active and authorised site" for peaceful demonstrations.
"Rumours are circulating on social media alleging that Jantar Mantar has been locked or closed for protests. These claims are entirely false, misleading, and devoid of facts. It is officially clarified that Jantar Mantar remains an active and authorised site for peaceful and authorised demonstrations. As per the Hon'ble Supreme Court Order and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the Delhi Police thereupon in compliance of it, a maximum of 1,000 persons may be permitted at the venue," the post read.
It added: "This permission is granted by the competent authority upon formal application by the concerned organisers or individual(s), subject to adherence to prescribed terms and conditions. Citizens are strongly advised not to believe or circulate unverified information and to rely strictly on official communications for accurate updates."
The clarification from police came after several reports and viral posts on social media claimed that the Jantar Mantar site had been closed for further protests.
Several visuals on the internet showed barricades at the protest site being welded shut.
This comes days after Jantar Mantar witnessed a 37-day-long agitation, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), over the NEET-UG paper leak and other issues.
It finally came to an end after Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation as the Union Education Minister on July 25 and was replaced by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.- The Statesman/ANN
